Background

CD41 (gene ITGA2B), also named integrin alpha-IIb / platelet GPIIb (UniProt: P08514), is expressed on platelets and megakaryocytes as the most abundant platelet integrin. It pairs with CD61 (β3) to form αIIbβ3 (GPIIb/IIIa), a receptor for fibrinogen/vWF (RGD sequence) mediating platelet aggregation and thrombosis. ITGA2B mutations cause the bleeding disorder Glanzmann thrombasthenia; αIIbβ3 is the target of GPIIb/IIIa antagonists (abciximab, eptifibatide, tirofiban).
